Go on to perfection.
Heb. 6:1-3. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection, not laying again
the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrines of baptisms, and of laying on of hands,
and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgement. And this we will do, if God permit.
In this passage it is a call to grow up, to achieve spiritual maturity. When the Apostle speaks of “leaving the
principles of the doctrine of Christ”, he is not advocating loosing or forgetting them, he is simply saying “grow
up”.
If we continue laying foundations instead of moving forward we shall remain as babes, and not attain any degree of maturity.
Yes, we must keep the principles of the doctrine of Christ in our hearts, but we must build on them rather than dwell in
the same place. When a builder has laid the foundations for a property, he does not continue to build another foundation
for that same property, he starts to build on that foundation. The foundation is there to support the building that is built
on it, this is its superstructure.
As this superstructure supports the building, so Christ supports us, He is our foundation, but He expects us to grow up
and not remain as babes.
When the Apostle speaks of “not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works”, he is referring
to the times that, if we have sinned and have confessed that sin, God is faithful and just to forgive that sin. So what is
the point of repeatedly asking for forgiveness for that same error, when God has already dealt with it?
If we are continually requesting forgiveness for the same sin, then it stands to reason that we are not trusting and believing
that God has forgiven us. This again is the reason for the maturity that is required. We must trust and believe that whatever
God says is true. If He says your sins are forgiven, then forgiven they are, and we need not dwell on them, but, “go
on unto perfection”.
Let us take note of what God want’s, He wants a mature bride, not an immature one.
He wants spiritual adults, not babes. When a new born baby arrives, if that child did not grow then both parents would
be very concerned, and rightly so. So it is with Christians, if we do not grow up then it is obvious there is something wrong.
Let us therefore grow up in God to full maturity.
Amen.
